The zoo is astounded to announce the birth of an eastern bongo

We are even more thrilled when endangered species give birth, even though every creature’s birth should be celebrated.

There is exciting news to share from Potter Park Zoo in third-largestigan. There, on March 5, a mother whose name was Uzuri gave birth to an eastern bongo.

Although eastern bongos are a vulnerable species, this new calf is the fifth and second born at this zoo since 2014.

The sub-Saharan African region is home to the world’s third largest antelope, the Eastern bongo. With their white-yellow stripes and long, spiraling horns, the species are diverse and very appealing.

There are fewer of these endangered species in the wild than there are in captivity. In the United States, zoos accredited by AZA house about 300 eastern bongos. Additionally, the breeding programs at these zoos, including Potter Park Zoo, are too important to keep eastern bongos from going extinct.
