Each birth of an endangered species is welcomed by animal lovers and those people who care for our environment a bit. The birth of this endangered African elephant calf is also a great celebration.
On March 2, Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium announced that an 11-year-old female African elephant Lolly gave birth to a male calf. It was her 3rd calf.
African elephants are incredible animals but they are vulnerable because of habitat loss and poaching. Henry Doorly Zoo has been part of elephant protection projects like the 96 Elephants Campaign. And after the birth, they gave everything the little elephants needed.
The Campaign encourages the increased crackdown on the illegal ivory trade, citing that 96 elephants a day are killed for their ivory.
According to the zoo, another elephant named Jayei is also pregnant and will give birth in this summer.
