Randy Travis, who was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame, moved the crowd to tears with a sing-along performance of “Amazing Grace” three years after a stroke threatened to mute his famed voice.
At the medallion ceremony in Nashville, Tennessee, where he was inducted alongside fiddler Charlie Daniels and music producer Fred Foster, Travis performed one more time. Age 57 is what Travis is.
Musicians such as Kris Kristofferson, Dolly Parton, Alan Jackson, Brad Paisley, Garth Brooks, and many more paid homage to the three medal recipients.
Mary Davis-Travis, Travis’s wife, has spoken out in the media about the six months Travis spent in the hospital after suffering a viral-caused stroke. Travis is a Grammy-winning vocalist.
“Randy stared death in the face, but death blinked,” Davis-Travis remarked. “God’s evidence of a miracle stands before you today.”
Travis was recognized for setting a new benchmark by becoming the first country singer to have their first album (‘Storms of Life’) certified platinum within the first year of release. He paved the way in the 1990s for neo-traditional artists like Alan Jackson, Clint Black, and Brooks.
Early in the 1990s, Jackson, who sang “On the Other Hand,” went on tour with Travis. At the time, Jackson was compared to Elvis.
It was insane when he performed because the women were yelling and collapsing, according to Jackson. I enjoyed it. I was just so ecstatic to hear someone singing authentic country music, making that impact, and selling all those CDs.
Daniels, the fiddler who played on “The Devil Went Down to Georgia,” was acclaimed for his ability to blend country, gospel, bluegrass, and Southern rock into a single sound.
A plaque on this wall, according to Daniels, “is not just another award or accolade.” It’s a historical record. An endless history book.
