Two friendly men assured an elderly woman who was in need of their regular free lawn mowing after she had just been discharged from the hospital that she need not worry.
Now, every two weeks, Terrence Stroy and Rodney Smith Jr. visit to check on her grass and, more significantly, to show her how much they care.
“We worked on this lady’s yard today. She was telling us how the neighbor was trying to charge her to cut her yard, but she was on a fixed income and had just left the hospital, so she couldn’t afford it, Rodney wrote.

She also described how he bullies her to get the money. However, she need not worry any longer since Raising Men Lawn Care Service will take care of her lawn every two weeks for FREE, just like we take care of the other lawns. She can spend the money on items like medication that she actually needs. “We are changing things!”
Rodney and Terrence are the owners of Raising Men Lawn Care, a nonprofit that offers free lawn care to elderly people, people with disabilities, single mothers, and veterans.

When Rodney initially started assisting with lawn maintenance, he saw an old guy having a lot of difficulty mowing his lawn. He told himself, “I should do something about it.” To assist the elderly and those who had difficulty mowing their lawns, he took on the challenge of free-mowing 40 yards. What started as a one-off personal challenge evolved into a program that now includes more than 400 young people from all around America who also freely trim their neighbors’ lawns.
The 50 Yard Challenge was created by Rodney, who asks kids and teenagers around the nation to cut 50 lawns for those in need. They sign up by publishing a picture of themselves carrying a sign that reads, “I accept the 50 yard challenge,” on social media, and then they start working.
Let’s imagine a young person in New York accepted the dare. All they would need to do is create a sign that reads, “I accept the 50 Yard Challenge,” and we would give them a white Raising Men Lawn Care Service T-shirt, sunglasses, and ear protection in exchange. After cutting 10 lawns, they are given an orange shirt, followed by 20 green, 30 blue, 40 red, and 50 black. And when they turn 50, we fly over to take care of their lawns alongside them and gift them brand-new lawnmowers, according to Rodney.
Raising Men Lawn Care aspires to create an exciting program to keep our youngsters, both girls and boys, on a positive road while learning and appreciating their importance in society, in addition to helping those in need with their lawns.
Rodney stated, “I’m simply trying to inspire them to go out and make a difference. There are too many children playing video games inside. And I think what I’m doing serves my purpose. I clearly recall asking God to use me as his vessel during a one-on-one chat we had a few years ago. That day, a week later, and even a month later, he still didn’t respond to my question. A few years later, in 2015, I saw an elderly man mowing his grass outside and it appeared like he was having difficulty. I pulled over and assisted him. I believed I could cut 40 lawns by the end of the winter at the time because I was pursuing my bachelor’s degree in computer technology. However, I finished cutting 40 lawns so quickly that I increased my target to 100. After cutting my 100th lawn, a month and a half later, I had the concept for raising men lawn care service.
Participating in the 50 Yard Challenges enables young people to appreciate generosity and service to those in need.
“I let them know how much of a difference they’re making. In Huntsville, where I currently reside, one of our children came out to us for the first time, and at first he said, “I don’t want to do this.” However, after he completed cutting his first lawn—for an old man—I asked him on video how it felt to know that he had changed someone’s life. And he smiled broadly. Oh, did you see his face just now, the man said. After I had done cutting his lawn, he grinned broadly and thanked me. Oh my god, oh my god. I mean, it’s priceless to watch his face light up after mowing his first lawn, and many of the kids are reacting in the same way. So it’s really great to watch how a tiny concept can develop into something that motivates young people all throughout the country and even the world, according to Rodney.
Recently, Rodney made the decision to go to all 50 states and cut lawns for people in need.
“Before I embarked on the tour, I asked my followers if they knew of anyone in the towns and states I would be visiting. I thus chose a city in each state where I would be traveling, and I put it out. As soon as people saw it, they began submitting photos of the lawns of veterans, single mothers, the elderly, and individuals with disabilities. I cut three to four lawns on average per city. At times, there is more.
He already has a wealth of priceless experiences and memories from his tour.

“I remember just a few days ago, this lady, she was a widow for a couple of years, and she just let the lawn go, because her husband used to take care of the lawn,” Rodney said. But I went and cut it for her because it hadn’t been mowed for at least three or four years.
