A young child who was kidnapped by her mother in July 2017 was located thanks to her inclusion on the Unsolved Mysteries relaunch on Netflix.
Kayla Unbehaun, who was nine years old when she was kidnapped, was found in Asheville, North Carolina, according to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.
Her mother, Heather Unhebhaun, was detained after being accused of removing her from South Elgin, Illinois, in 2017.
Kayla’s non-custodial mother took her when she was just nine years old.
Local reports state that on July 5, Kayla’s father attempted to pick up his daughter from her mother’s house but was unable in doing so. On July 4, Heather allegedly loaded Kayla into her car and left.
The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children has posted an image of Kayla as a nine-year-old as well as an age-progression photo online since her disappearance. To raise awareness, a Facebook page was set up, and occasionally a local news story would mention her absence.
Additionally, Kayla made an appearance on the Unsolved Mysteries revival on Netflix, and it was her presence on the program that resulted in her rescue.
A store owner who recently seen an episode of the show recognized Kayla, according to WSOC-TV, and alerted the police.
Authorities detained Kayla, who is now 15 years old, and arrested Heather.
“I’m so happy Kayla is safe and sound at home. I want to express my gratitude to the South Elgin Police Department, the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, and any law enforcement organizations that helped in her case. I also want to thank each and every one of the “Bring Kayla Home” Facebook page’s fans for helping to spread awareness and keeping her story alive. As we rekindle our relationship and negotiate this new beginning, we humbly request privacy, Kayla’s father stated in a statement.
The $250,000 bond Heather is now being held on while she awaits extradition to Illinois.
I’m so happy Kayla made it back home, even if it will take some time for everyone to make up for the missed years. The time has come to start the mending process.
