Keeping huge marine animals in captivity has always been a controversial topic. Many aquariums keep them for amusement but this seems very abnormal for animal activists who value the freedom of wild animals most of all.
Lolita is one of these giant marine mammals that has been kept in captivity since 1970. Lolita is one of the most famous orcas and is the second largest one in captivity.

Lolita was formerly known by the name Tokitae. She was captured in Washington’s Puget Sound in 1970 and now is 57 years old. Then Lolita was bought by Miami Seaquarium where she has been the main attraction for visitors over the past years.

However, now animal activists reach their aim by freeing Lolita from Miami Seaquarium. Animal activists kept claiming that the tank where she was kept was too small for her size.

In 2015, thousands of protestors gathered outside Miami Seaquarium, and #FreeLolita gained traction on Twitter. In recent years, Lolita’s health was declined and the Miami Seaquarium declared that she would no longer take part in shows.

Luckily, after 50 years of captivity, Lolita returns to her home waters.
